Inexplicably successful grunge rockers OK, YOU GALS HAVE PROVEN THAT women can do it, too. You can pick up some instruments, form a band, and break out of the Minneapolis underground into the national, even international, scene. But boy, do you make our heads hurt. We'd rather listen to ten gerbils in a blender than Kat Bjelland's gut-ripping shriek; we'd sooner be at the receiving end of a cattle prod than Michelle Leon and Lori Barbero's rhythm section from hell. At least the Replacements, Husker Du, and Soul Asylum wrote the occasional song between their thrashy outbursts. You chicks just spit out hairballs of noise and give them names like "Swamp Pussy" and "Fork Down Throat". This may appeal to pale, disaffected youths and trendy British DJs, but it makes us retch. We hear you're big in Europe -- so we think you should live there.
